Y5
Careers Convention
Exploring
options for future careers
More
than 170 children from Witchford
Area Schools Partnership took part in the East Cambridgeshire
Primary Careers Convention on
Thursday 11 March.
Exhibitors
from 14 different industries and professions, including Star Radio,
Isle Vet Group and
Cambridge Building Society were on hand to tell the pupils about jobs they
could be doing when they grow up.
This direct contact with employers opened the children's
eyes to jobs they might not have considered, and to the idea that colleges and universities are
within their reach.
Both pupils
and teachers were impressed by the convention, one pupil commenting
"I think it was really good fun and it made me think about a job".
A teacher added that it was "a really first class event. My
pupils are engaged and inspired".
The event,
organised by Witchford Area
Schools Partnership, Ely Schools Partnership
and Ely Littleport and Witchford Locality Team, was held at
the City of Ely Community College. ECU Trust sponsored the
information packs which each child received. These packs
guided the children through questions to ask exhibitors, and will
provide a reference document for each child to keep.
Sing
Up!
Nationally
renowned folk musician, Roger Watson, worked with Witchford Village
College and six of the feeder primary schools on a joint
Folk Music project this spring
term.
Years 5, 7
and 8 learned folk songs, and worked with Roger at their own
schools, before coming together at Witchford Village College on 10th
March for a day of music . They were joined by other
local musicians.
After lots of
practise they gave two fabulous performances: one to Witchford
Village College students, and one to parents. A CD and booklet
of songs will be produced for schools to continue the project with
classes in future years.
Family Learning
Families
from the seven primary schools
took part in an action packed
weekend of FREE activities in October. With more than 27
different activities taking place there was something for
everyone. Reptile Experience, Make a Hovercraft, Djembe
drumming, Cookery and Kite building proved to be particularly
popular. This was our second Family Learning Festival, and
we saw nearly twice as many families joining in the fun.

Look out for news
of the
October 2010
Festival
coming soon.

Home Access is a gov

help low-income families to get access to a
computer and the internet to get online at home.
Find out more at the
Home Access website.
The Home Access has been very successful with over 200,000 grants awarded. Based on current application return rates it is unlikely that
more application packs for the main programme
will be sent out after the third week of June.
Any families who think they are eligible for a Home Access Grant
are encouraged to apply without further delay and anyone with an application form at home should complete it and send it back immediately.
